Book#5 Excerpt About Syon

#‎Book‬ ‪#‎Excerpt‬ I talk all day about how emotional and intense Book #5, "The Owl from Oblivion" is but the words really don't convey anything unless I give you a real sample. So here is the beginning of the Chapter 8, "Syon's Mishap of Reality". You'll have to tell me if this piques your interest or makes you recoil in horror.
{

Paul7 materializes invisibly into the room of a sleeping twelve-year-old boy—the reality timeline Syon. He recoils at the sharp sour-milk smell accosting his nose mixed with the smell of stale, greasy cheese defusing from the bed, with a faint whiff of mouse feces emanating from the numerous holes chewed in the sides of the mattress. He floats quietly over to the bed and firmly grips Syon’s head by placing his hands on opposing sides; his ghostly presence, like a warrior decrepit from many wars, locks in a battle to preserve the innocence of Syon, who has just arrived from the terrifying rip in time. Paul7 asserts control on Syon’s mind using his direct telepathic connection as he searches through Syon’s memories. Using the same memory-erasing technique he had used on Elof2 to free him from emotional connections to his abusive pseudo-father, Paul7 erases the trauma and memory of the events surrounding the rip in time. Syon’s memory of the supernatural timeline becomes like a dream, containing only memories of his love-filled parents and the memories of his time-travel journeys with him connected to “Squiddy”, the mature Atreyeu form of Jenny, where Syon used his powerful control over time to create positive changes in everyone’s lives.

Paul7 smiles and removes his hands, feeling a personal victory in being able to touch and influence such a powerful mind. For the first time in his life, he feels strong and important. Syon moans loudly as if he is in pain as a rat emerges from his bedding. Paul7 points his finger at the rat, raising its squealing, struggling mass into the air. He smiles the smirk of forbidden pleasure as he aims his other palm at the rat, disintegrating it into a cloud of precipitating dust. As Syon twists in his small bed violently, trying to wake himself, Paul7 smiles and thinks, “And so the play of Paul25 begins and likewise my reign of terror upon the humans who would harm these advanced children.” He quickly jaunts away to avoid detection and the possibility of his discipline weakening, causing him to interfere in the timeline to suit his own pleasures.

Syon wakes and abruptly sits up in his small, womb like bed covered with ragged blankets, with discarded clothes piled on top to form a nest. He rubs his leg where it was bitten and examines his hands and body. “I am older now.” He jolts as his new life’s memories hit him. “This is terrible. I want the dream—I want it back now!” He buries his face into his pillow, unfazed by the overpowering stench of the pillow case used for years without being washed, and pulls up heaps of fabric scraps and outgrown shirts to completely bury himself, shutting out the world.

Through the paper thin wall next to his bed, the sound of his dad throwing up in the lavatory is inescapable. With every heave, his three-hundred-pound dad slaps the wall behind the fixture, attempting to steady himself. His wavers on every heave, slamming against the nearby sink, rumble the building’s plumbing. Syon’s curls into a defensive ball of submission, shaking with fear. He rubs the back of his upper arms and jumps; there is a sharp pain from a swollen spot where his dad grabbed him hard the previous night amidst a tidal wave of incoherent screaming. His body had swollen the area of repeated assault, with internal scar tissue infiltrating the bruising in a desperate attempt to protect the fragile veins of Syon’s boney arms.

The heaves rise in violence and intensity as his dad’s body desperately labors to expel its toxic contents through the collapsed esophagus pinched from layers of excessively vascularized fat, early calls for help from an unhealthy liver. The extreme violence of his dad’s heaving causes the ceiling to shake, with little chunks of plaster and spiders falling to the ground, and centipedes seeking shelter in the openings of the electrical sockets, the outlet’s protective covers having long ago failed. The extreme shaking told Syon that his dad had probably lost control, like usually did, and had begun spraying the entire tiny, closet-like bathroom.

While in his dark haven, Syon’s relentless mind wanders, his genius desperately searching for something to relieve its steady diet of boredom and helplessness. As it often did, his mind found philosophical thought about his current situation an irresistible and compulsive obsession. “I am, a prisoner of time. On the other time line, I wield the forces of nature and here, I am counting down the days until my emancipation or until my dad thinks I'm old enough to kill. The summer before year eight; the summer I met Professor Kettil, the only teacher who didn’t consider me a disposable gutter child with a broken mind, and Stefan, a child with a mind powerful enough to take me from this nightmare, at least for a short time.”

He pokes his head through a crack in his shield and like a turtle, surveys his floor; several more shirts have been added to the pile of clothes his dad thinks he should wear. There's an oversized one with a beer ad on it and one that's likely too small, with a soccer ball and a team name. The small one was probably added by his mum, who hadn't checked his size in a couple of years.

The shirts in the pile have several things in common: they are done in the primary colors, or as Syon likes to call them, the kindergarten colors; they were likely free; they are guaranteed to be dull and unclever like the people who are his parents' friends; and the designs are only of themes that would lead a boy to adulthood as a man, defined by the brutish code his dad adheres to and his mum lusts after.

The barfing continues. “Wow, Leonard had a big night at the pub,” Syon says as his mind adjusts to the reality of the new timeline.

Leonard is how he refers to his father here, not wishing for anyone to know of any ties connecting them. Suddenly, there is silence. He listens carefully, wondering if his father is still alive. A steady stream of cussing followed by water running in the sink breaks the silence. “Blimey, I can smell it from here. I hope mum feels like cleaning it up. I’ll pop before going in that loo.”

A frightened mouse scampers into the pile of shirts to hide from the perceived onslaught of a predator—a predator willing to stomp out life without giving it a second thought.

Syon thinks, “Please little mouse, chew holes in my cesspool of shirts—make a soft lined nest for your babies so that I might see what a soft nest feels like.”

Tyco on the Reality Timeline

#IllustrationOfTheDay Here an illustration I just finished for my book coming out this summer, Book #5, "The Owl from Oblivion". This character is a fifth grader called Tyco. He lives in Tucson, Arizona. His father is a Professor in Astrophysics and his mom is a post doc in Archeology specializing in Mayan civilization. Tyco is not your typical Mayan kid as he has been "modified" by extraterrestrials.

Movie Script Summary for the Books?

#‎writing‬ I was reading about how to get a movie script made into a movie. They showed examples of scripts that were movie execs favorites. I took my books and pretended they were movie scripts. I wrote movie script summaries as if the books were movie scripts. So what do you think? Would these sound like good movies?

My Books #1 - #4 as a group:
Modified by aliens to be evolved beings, two teens, an artistic prodigy and a life science genius, want to live a secluded life and raise a family, but they must pass alien trials and learn to be the secret king and queen of contemporary Earth, or they will be executed.

My Book #5:
Dreams are alternative timelines; a young teen boy is the genius son of physically abusive parents or he is the master of time; a teen couple, modified by aliens, rules humanity with tragic results, or they are the most promising prodigies of the world; will love lead to a convergence of timelines or Oblivion?

So what do you think? Do these sound like movies you would like to see?

Some Excerpts as I Edit

#‎amwriting‬ book #5, "The Owl from Oblivion", draft 8, 158,637 words, 524 6x9 trade pages. Read aloud editing phase. Here is a little excerpt from what I am editing at this moment. I get a bit philosophical in a number of places in the book:

Paul25 watches Paul1 and Sophistan1, mentally musing in the Atreyeu part of his mind, “The two zombies of a dying timeline comfort each other, like a ship and an anchor finding comfort in each others company as they race to the bottom of the ocean. Paul1, had you not decided to imitate your first love, Tonya, the computer, your higher Atreyeu thought might have taken hold and saved you. Instead, Oblivion, the ocean bottom that has consumed many sailors, awaits to engulf you.”
...
Syon, asleep in the hospital bed on the reality timeline and watching this through the dream, silently begs in his mind, “Let me back on to this timeline, Paul25, just one more time. Let me see my dad as he was, before he is no longer my dad. Let me keep the feeling of true love from a parent before Leonard, the monster, kills me.”
...
Paul25 again muses in the Atreyeu part of his mind. “Love is tragedy banked. I am sorry for what I must do to you in the future, Dad, on the other timeline. It will hurt you deeply but all of our futures will be positive afterwards.”

The Doom of Neshalia

Here is a dramatic excerpt from draft 7 of book #5, "The Owl from Oblivion".

Neshalia hits the display screen like a bug on a windshield with blood spraying in all directions. She slides down the display, a loud cracking sound coming from her wings as she hits the floor. Ty immediately stands up, screams, and grabs his knee. He quickly becomes quiet as he peers in terror first at his father and then at Neshalia's broken body. He quivers uncontrollably, looking down at his father's bleeding nose and elbow.

His father moans loudly and gazes up at his son, who is frozen in terror. “I am hurt severely, my son, but I will survive, most assuredly. Go ahead and care for her. I know you want to.”

Ty hobbles quickly over to Neshalia's broken, popped-open body and kneels beside her. His mouth drops open; numerous crystalline fibers with a dim, flickering glow fill the ruptures, lighting the multicolored, slimy gel oozing from the breaches like the slow rinsing of a painter’s palette.  Neshalia slides her hand along the floor towards Ty and Ty grabs it. “It is time my child—the art of my lifeform must now slowly fade.”

Tears shoot from his eyes and he screams, “No! No! It's not fair! My mummy died. You cannot die too.”

“You are the most beautiful of us, Ty. Do not be sad. Do you remember the first time I gave you the beam of knowledge?”

“Yes, Nan-ma. I was so scared. I didn’t know what I was, why I was, and if I would continue to live. I was so confused. You gave me a reason to live. You told me what my purpose is. And you loved me—the first love I felt from any Saeshell—the first love from my own kind other than my dad.”

“Look at you Ty; no Saeshell as young as you has developed such a clear sense of purpose. With such an early start, your Saeshell abilities, when you are fully developed, we be so amazing.  I am sorry I will not be here to explain and admire each of your talents as they sprout from you, the most loving of all Saeshells.

“No! No! I will die without you, Nan-ma. You haven't taught me. You haven't taught me yet!”

Syon on the Supernatural and Reality Timeline

#‎IllustrationOfTheDay‬ The first two pictures are Syon on the supernatural timeline in books #1 and #3.

The third picture is Syon on the reality timeline of book #5. Books #1 - #4 only have the supernatural timeline and book #5 has both the supernatural timeline and the reality timeline.

Syon on the reality timeline is a much more serious, much more human character than on the supernatural timeline. Some of that humanity bursts onto the supernatural timeline in book #5 when he has the choice between remaining the master of time and ceasing to exist, or being transported  to the reality timeline and become the abused child of adoptive parents. He feels that if he continues to live on the reality timeline, that he will suffer endlessly in a boring, worthless life. But he finds that even on the reality timeline, there is something special about him, though he can't quite understand  what it is. In this excerpt, Syon laments going back to his abusive father, "Leonard".  This excerpt is from draft 7, Book #5, "The Owl from Oblivion".

Syon collapses to a sitting position in the time-lane, shedding tears. He clinches and shakes his fists in sad frustration. “I want Stefan and Tova2 to make me. I don’t want to go back to Leonard. I want to play in the time-lanes of eternity, going from event to event, not trapped in a boring meat grinder on Earth."

Squiddy appears, disconnected from Syon.

“Squiddy, don’t leave me,” screams Syon. “Don’t abandon me to the monster!”

Squiddy changes form into Jenny. She sits down beside Syon and wraps her arm around Syon’s shoulder. “I love you, Syon. I am glad we shared this journey together and that you sustained me with your life force. There is no greater love than that, Syon—the giving of life. I want you to live, Syon. I want you to live forever. To make that happen, I must leave you.”

“Why?!”

...

Syon stands, wipes his eyes, and reaches to touch one of the rings. A wall of red electric sparks stops his hand before it reaches the ring. “I wanted to live in here forever, with time as my playground—the infinities, I thirst for their amusement. As sure as the winds of time will raise the sands again, I will lose you to a field of pain and sorrow. But it is better than Oblivion.” He pulls his wand from his pocket and kisses it. “I have one last task for you: take me to the portal.” He disappears.

Writing Update 4/6/15

#‎amwriting‬ Book #5, "The Owl from Oblivion", 157,331 words, draft 7, 518 pages in 6x9 format. I finished draft 6 which contains all of the professional editor's changes plus all of the extra stuff I wrote to address the editor's misunderstandings. I also extended the book and gave it a new ending to accommodate the additional plot thread prompted by the editor's comments. I am now working on draft 7 which focuses on global changes the editor suggested. Mainly, these changes give my writing much more "punch" by removing the flying at 30,000 feet some scenes had. I have to say this editor has been like taking two college courses in writing plus some custom tutoring. While being outrageously expensive for a long book for such as this, it has been worth every penny. If I never sell another book I'll be a tremendously better writer because of this.

6x9 Front Cover for Book #5

#‎IllustrationOfTheDay‬ Here is the front cover of book #5 redone for the 6x9 trade format.
